Bidwell Mansion was the home of Chico's founder, General John Bidwell. Completed in 1868, the same year of his marriage to Annie Ellicott Kennedy Bidwell, the couple lived in the house the rest of their lives. Now a California State Park, the Italian-style Victorian house has been restored to illustrate what the home may have been like during the Bidwell's time. When constructed, the house featured the most modern amenities, including running water, gas lighting and eight fireplaces. Guided tours allow visitors to experience all three floors of the mansion. Each of the rooms features both original artifacts and furniture from the Victorian era. Bidwell's interest in horticulture is still apparent by the diversity of trees and plants found on the park's grounds. Guided tours of the mansion are offered Friday through Wednesday from noon until 4:00p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Group tours (20 or more) and school groups are welcome with advance reservations by calling (530) 895-6144. Located adjacent to the mansion, is a modern Visitor Center. The Visitor Center houses a museum exhibit area and The General's Store. A destination of its own, the store offers a selection of local books, popular toys from the 1800s and State Park paraphernalia. All proceeds from the store go directly to the Bidwell Mansion Association (BMA). The BMA raises money for the restoration, preservation, and interpretation at Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park.
